MORRISON’S SMOKELESS STOVE INTERVENTION PROJECT

Above: Tripod stove - Traditional

Below: Improved Morrison’s stove

Morrison’s Fuel efficient stove is gradually finding increasing support in the slum communities of Kwesimintsim and Kojokrom especially among the palm kernel extractors and other food vendors such as pito brewers and Fante kenkey makers.

Until recently, the women into palm kernel extraction business in Kojokrom and Kwesimintsim where a research was undertaken it become clear from the figures gathered that about 95% of the women were using the tripod stove for cooking. They used a lot of fuel wood which caused environmental degradation and pollution causing green house effect. This in effect affected their health status as a lot of smoke and heat produced got into their eyes and often fell ill. They used the money they have saved from their business to seek medical attention. They spent much time in cooking and cost of production was very high. Generally, their standard of living was pathetic.

In order to safeguard the situation the women in the project communities are going through, CHF International and DQF partnered with Albert Morrison to construct the Morrison’s smokeless stove for the people of these two communities at no cost to them. Their capacity was also built on the construction and use of the fuel efficient stove.

As a result of the intervention package to the two communities, Kwesimintsim and Kojokrom can now boast of twenty (20) improved fuel efficient stoves - Morrison’s smokeless stove. The beneficiaries of this project have testified flamboyantly that the stove has indeed brought a big relieve to them and their families and immediate community. The smoke which affected their eyes now passes through the chimney. The heat level has gone down. They would now be able save money for the future instead of taking it to the hospital for medical attention. They were now better off than previously.

Due to the scope of the project, a lot more people would have been covered and even some other women have approached us for the same facility indicating the relieve the Morrison’s smokeless stove has brought to them and for that matter the benefit they stand to derive from the facility.
